CHARACTER
NAME: Jin Zixuan
CANON: Mo Dao Zu Shi
CANON POINT: Chapter 76, right before Wen Ning does an oopsie
AGE: 22 (estimation based on context)
BACKGROUND: MDZS wiki, Jin Zixuan wiki, and my more detailed write-up.

PERSONALITY:

As the only legitimate son of Jin Guangshan, and the heir to one of the most powerful (and richest) clans in the cultivation world, Jin Zixuan has grown used to a privileged life, though the narration points out that he is well-liked by most who meet him, implying he is usually well-mannered. He’s a talented cultivator and in his lifetime he was ranked third in the list of top gentleman, but this wasn’t handed to him on a silver platter. He’s clearly worked hard to earn his place in the cultivation world and as a result feels he has every right to be proud about it.

And Jin Zixuan is a very proud individual. He can back it up with his skills, of course, but being a product of the Jin bloodline also plays a part. The Jin Clan is proud by nature so he’s grown up in that environment, to be proud of his accomplishments and who he is. This can come off as arrogance, though, and it’s a point of contention between Jin Zixuan and the joined forces of Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng. From a young age, the brothers cannot stand Jin Zixuan and how he seems like he’s better than everyone, even their precious sister, Jiang Yanli. And when they were all younger, Jin Zixuan did feel that way to an extent. He didn’t appreciate Jiang Yanli until much later, only viewing her as average and unsatisfying, something Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng could never understand. Jin Zixuan has had to go through most of his life with the scorn of those two behind him, because of their differing opinions and personalities. They consistently call him a flower peacock behind his back, exemplifying how his personality can be read by others.

His arrogance can also stem from the fact that he is the only legitimate heir to the family, despite the countless half-siblings scattered around the country, thanks to the promiscuous ways of his father, Jin Guangshan. Other families might find that troublesome, in case one of these bastard children tries to usurp the throne, so to speak, but Jin Guangshan doesn’t make it a habit to recognize any of them (except Jin Guangyao, but he did heroically kill Wen Ruohan in the Sunshot Campaign, so he couldn’t exactly be ignored). Jin Zixuan’s place in the family is surprisingly safe.

But it’s also because of this place that Jin Zixuan doesn’t always immediately put himself out there if it could put his life in danger. The Jin Sect has a habit of watching events from the sidelines and only jumping in when they know their choice will be beneficial to them. They don’t typically lead the charge. Jin Guangshan idled before finally joining in the Sunshot Campaign and in a way Jin Zixuan acted similarly in the Xuanwu of Slaughter’s cave in Qishan when he helped protect MianMian. While he didn’t jump at the chance to protect her at first, when she finally hid behind him and Lan Wangji, he refused to move and put her in danger, even at the risk of his own life. He knew the situation was wrong and he called Wen Chao out on it, proving he has his heart in the right place, but he isn’t always proactive.

After marrying Jiang Yanli, however, that changes a little bit. Wei Wuxian even realizes that he’s matured somewhat in that time. Jin Zixuan has never been particularly fond of Jiang Cheng or especially Wei Wuxian, but because those two are important to Jiang Yanli, as well as being all she has left of her immediate family, he tries his best to suck up his negative feelings toward them. He’s more civil with Jiang Cheng, seeing as how they’re brothers-in-law and Jiang Cheng is in good social standing, making their relationship easier to navigate. He and Wei Wuxian have always butted heads and gotten in fights, though, so their relationship is harder to deal with. And yet, Jin Zixuan still tries to stand up for him and even invites him to Jin Ling’s one-month celebration because he’s important to Jiang Yanli. Even against everyone else’s better judgment he tries to be fair to Wei Wuxian. His heart is in the right place!

Perhaps his most well-known trait is the fact that he’s very easily flustered when it comes to the subject of Jiang Yanli. When he was younger, he didn’t really care about her, but after having his eyes opened to her goodness (and after his mother yelled at him a few times for being stupid) he started to find her appealing. He’s just also kind of terrible when it comes to expressing his feelings. The Phoenix Mountain hunt is the prime example of Jin Zixuan failing when trying to be cool in front of the girl he likes. He lies to save face, saying it was his mother who invited Jiang Yanli to come to the hunt though it was actually his idea and when he admits this, he runs away in embarrassment. After their marriage these emotional struggles seem to calm down, considering they give birth to a son very soon after, but it’s always possible that he could still get flustered.

Even so, it seems that Jiang Yanli has helped change him for the better, as has fatherhood, though he hardly gets a chance for it. It’s still clear that he loves Jiang Yanli and Jin Ling very much, trying his best to make their lives as good as possible while he can. He even speaks of them endearingly, calling them A-Li and A-Ling, respectively, as opposed to their full names. There is no indication that he would be disloyal to his wife like his father has been to his mother and she and Jin Ling would want for nothing as long as Jin Zixuan is there.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

Jin Zixuan, like every cultivator has developed a Golden Core, which is a sphere nestled within their bodies that gives them the ability to do all the supernatural xianxia stuff that they do. It is the source of their spiritual energy and without said energy, a cultivator wouldn’t be able to fight with their spiritual swords for long periods of time, fly on their swords, imbue their music with any magical abilities, share spiritual energy with others, or perform things of such a nature that puts them a step up above normal humans. Cultivators also have more stamina and are more resilient than those without a Core or spiritual energy.

Adjacent to these spiritual powers is the use of talismans, slips of paper that can be pre-made for future use or whipped up on the spot. They can cover all kinds of necessities, such as warding off evil spirits (or even attracting them), providing light in the darkness, or helping start a fire. Jin Zixuan would be very familiar with these.

He’s proficient in swordsmanship, as well as archery, and would be able to hold his own in a hand-to-hand fight reasonably well (you would think he’s picked something up from the multiple occasions Wei Wuxian has laid into him, but you know).

INVENTORY:
- Suihua, his sword (yes, the same one that Jin Ling has)
- A qiankun pouch, which is basically a bag of holding

MOONBLESSING: Cordis
